AC Milan announced on Tuesday that Marco Borriello's thigh injury is more serious than first thought.

Borriello has been out since the beginning of November after sustaining the injury in training.

The 26-year-old was expected to return to action after the winter break, but managing director Adriano Galliani has revealed he will be sidelined until February at the earliest.

"Next year will be important for Borriello to recover his health," he told Corriere dello Sport. "He is almost certainly out for the whole of January."

Borriello returned to Milan in the summer from Genoa but missed the first game of the season with a knee injury.
